The JAPAN GENKI (Energize Japan) Project Beyond Japan, Nurturing People Full of Life

Idea behind the Energize Japan Project

The SUPER SHOW, a 21st Century Cultural Event

1. A new form of artistic expression from Kansai and Japan

The Super Show is a form of artistic expression that people have not previously experienced and that has been developed as a cultural event that Japan can take pride in.

A spectacle in a vast indoor space that is truly unique

The unique aspects of SUPER SHOWs become clear in the large venues that they are held in and that are transformed into a spectacular one-of-a-kind performance spaces.

Avant-garde performance space that unites the audience and performers

Many prominent historical forms of art such as Greek theater and Kabuki create a shared experience among those who perform and those who watch, and this is an issue that avant-garde forms of art in the 21st century must confront. The basic appeal of the SUPER SHOW is that it unites performers with the audience.

A new form of abstract expression that creates original value

Minimalism is one school of avant-garde art that reduces forms and costumes to the barest minimum and transforms them into the most abstract representations while creating an extremely realistic experience. The SUPER SHOW is an evolution of this idea, an abstract expression that stresses entertainment that everyone can enjoy.

2. Nurturing people full of life through participation in creating of the show

The unique features of the SUPER SHOW require the participation of a large number of ordinary people. Working with Kansai Yamamoto to create the show transforms many of these participants into people full of life.

The SUPER SHOW

A SUPER SHOW is a powerful spectacle.
“People power” is more important for the show than the stage equipment.
This power is generated by not only the large number of people but also the participation of people who are overflowing with the joy of being there and inspiring others, people full of life fervently pursing a dream.
On the stage and behind the scenes, these volunteers support and create the project from its preparatory stages.

3. Rediscovering the beauty, culture, and vitality of Japan

The SUPER SHOW for this project takes these ideas beyond Japan. From ancient times to the present, the folklore, culture, and art of Japan have continually evolved, and expressing the values embodied in these aspects of Japanese society through the SUPER SHOW demonstrates the country's exciting vitality.
The pillars of this vitality are not simply Japanese but all people who feel pride in, share, and work to maintain Japan's nature and the history, culture, and spirit born of this nature.

Colorful

The SUPER SHOW revives a rich sense of form and color based on Japan's pronounced four seasons and diverse natural climate.

Passionate culture

SUPER SHOWS are rooted in Japan's artistic sense and culture, such as Kabuki, a source of pride for Japanese throughout the world, and its diverse range of festivals that express the people's reverence for nature (Japan has an extremely large number of such festivals compared to other countries).

Passion

The Japanese of previous ages, who created the nature, history, and culture of the country, possessed a spirit that was a driving force in their lives, and modern Japanese possess this same energy.

4. Educating the world about Japan

In order for Japan to retain its vitality in the 21st century, it must continue to possess potent soft power and communicate this to the rest of the world.
The extremely creative SUPER SHOWS are a unique form of artistic expression.
Through these shows, we demonstrate Japan's soft power to the world and work to transform Japan into a country that others expect things of, respect, and yearn to be part of in the 21st century.
Out goals is to increase empathy towards Japan and contribute to friendly relations with other countries by expanding these events overseas, getting participants to come into direct contact with Japan's soft power, and inspiring participants.

Hokkaido Toyako Summit

At the G8 Hokkaido Toyako Summit, Kansai Yamamoto was responsible for not only the interior of the main conference hall where country leaders held discussions but also social events such as the performance involving traditional tetzutsu fireworks (hand-held, rope-bound bamboo tubes packed with gunpowder that spray fire). The project was unique in that it created a reception space that incorporated the beauty of Japan.

Expo Zaragoza 2008

Expo Zaragoza 2008 was held in Zaragoza, Spain.
Kansai Yamamoto produced the Festival of Life-Air, Earth, and Water event for Japan Day, which was held on July 21, 2008.

Expo 2005 Aichi Japan

In 2005, Yamamoto produced Let's Fly-Festival of Life, the opening event for Expo 2005 Aichi Japan. The event was a resounding success with Human Hymn and Vitality, which Kansai proposed, literally exploding in the hearts of people.

Berlin International Film Festival

The SUPER SHOW, held at the Nippon Budokan in 2004, was turned into the film Abordage. At the 2005 Berlin International Film Festival, the film was shown during an event and costume show as part of a special project that demonstrated Japan's vitality to the world.
